Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon discussed climate change with the pope before opening a one-day conference of scientists and religious leaders called &#8220;The Moral Dimensions of Climate Change and Sustainable Development&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The pope, who is due to make a major address on sustainable development at the United Nations in September, has said he believes man is primarily responsible for climate change and is writing an encyclical on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Ban, opening the conference of some 60 scientists, religious leaders and diplomats hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, urged industrialized countries to invest in clean energy and reduce their carbon footprints.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.reutersmedia.net\/resources\/r\/?m=02&amp;d=20150428&amp;t=2&amp;i=1044033157&amp;w=976&amp;fh=&amp;fw=&amp;ll=&amp;pl=&amp;r=LYNXMPEB3R0L6\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"177\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (4th L 1st row), Italian President Sergio Mattarella (3rd L 1st row) and Ecuador&#8217;s President Rafael Correa (4th R 1st row) attend a meeting about climate change and sustainable development at the Vatican April 28, 2015. REUTERS\/TONY GENTILE<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mitigating climate change and adapting to its effects are necessary to eradicate extreme poverty, reduce inequality and secure equitable, sustainable economic development,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering&#8217;s final joint declaration said &#8220;Human-induced climate change is a scientific reality, and its decisive mitigation is a moral and religious imperative for humanity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Paris summit on climate change in December &#8220;may be the last effective opportunity to negotiate arrangements that keep human-induced warming below 2 degrees C,&#8221; adding that the &#8220;current trajectory may well reach a devastating 4 degrees C or higher,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>Ban said he and the pope discussed Francis&#8217; keenly awaited encyclical, which will be addressed to all of the world&#8217;s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics and which the pope has said he hopes will influence the Paris conference.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.reutersmedia.net\/resources\/r\/?m=02&amp;d=20150428&amp;t=2&amp;i=1044033158&amp;w=976&amp;fh=&amp;fw=&amp;ll=&amp;pl=&amp;r=LYNXMPEB3R0L7\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"223\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photographer: OSSERVATORE ROMANO Tuesday, April 28, 2015 Pope Francis talks with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (C) during a meeting at the Vatican April 28, 2015. REUTERS\/Osservatore Romano<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;It (the encyclical) will convey to the world that protecting our environment is an urgent moral imperative and a sacred duty for all people of faith and people of conscience,&#8221; Ban said.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Sachs, Colombia University professor and director of the U.N.
