They are certainly eye catching \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Hornsby-Cathedral-Parish.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3614\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3614 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Hornsby-Cathedral-Parish.jpg\" alt=\"LTS Hornsby Cathedral Parish\" width=\"409\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Hornsby-Cathedral-Parish.jpg 409w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Hornsby-Cathedral-Parish-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Hornsby-Cathedral-Parish-133x150.jpg 133w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Hornsby-Cathedral-Parish-400x451.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/a>But what exactly do these words mean? And why is it such an important &amp; vital message to share?<\/p>\n<p>The Australian government\u2019s latest statistics as of 31 January 2016 revealed that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>54 children are held in Australian funded detention facilities in Nauru.<\/li>\n<li>88 children are held in detention facilities on the Australian mainland.<\/li>\n<li>293 children in community detention on the Australian mainland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Children Out of Immigration Detention (http:\/\/www.chilout.org\/)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Let Them Stay\u2019 is advocating that detention is no place for children and people seeking asylum to be staying. Many Australians hope that arbitrary and prolonged detention for families seeking asylum in Australia will be ended. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Let Them Stay\u2019 is a statement expressing concern for the detrimental effect that onshore and offshore detention has on people especially children. Organisations such as ChilOut (Children out of Immigration Detention) believe that \u201cevery child deserves to be free and have the right to play, learn, be healthy and grow up in a safe environment, regardless of how they arrive in Australia.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is important to clarify the language used in this humanitarian discussion, as there is often confusion and misuse of terms such as \u2018refugee\u2019 and \u2018asylum seeker\u2019. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Lindfield-Killara.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3615\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3615 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Lindfield-Killara.jpg\" alt=\"LTS Lindfield-Killara\" width=\"276\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Lindfield-Killara.jpg 276w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Lindfield-Killara-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Lindfield-Killara-84x150.jpg 84w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Refugee Council of Australia (2016) defines a refugee as: \u201cAny person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his\/her nationality and is unable, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself\/herself of the protection of that country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asylum seekers are \u201cpeople who have applied for protection as a refugee, but whose claims have not yet been recognised by a government. However, since recognition by a government is not required to meet the definition of a refugee, an asylum seeker may also be at the same time a refugee. Most refugees will have sought asylum at some point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-St-Ives.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3616\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3616 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-St-Ives.jpg\" alt=\"LTS St Ives\" width=\"359\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-St-Ives.jpg 359w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-St-Ives-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-St-Ives-111x150.jpg 111w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a>Exploring these definitions can clarify confusion and highlight the fact that there is nothing illegal about either of these status\u2019 despite messages often expressed through mainstream media.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis in his statement for the world day of migrants and refugees this year relayed his concern that \u201cIndifference and silence lead to complicity whenever we stand by as people are dying of suffocation, starvation, violence and shipwreck.\u201d He goes on to further state that: \u201cGod\u2019s fatherly care extends to everyone, like the care of a shepherd for his flock, but is particularly concerned for the needs of the sheep who are wounded, weary or ill.\u201d Pope Francis is urging us to \u201cwelcome the stranger\u201d because \u201cin the faces of others we see the face of Christ himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office is an organisation involved in this call to action and is a great place to source more information and statements from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. Familiarising ourselves with the \u00a0Australian Catholic Church teachings on <a href=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Epping.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3613\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3613 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Epping.png\" alt=\"LTS Epping\" width=\"339\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Epping.png 339w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Epping-204x300.png 204w, https:\/\/sjaroundthebay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LTS-Epping-102x150.png 102w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/a>issues of asylum and migration can help foster greater understanding and better enable us to \u201cprevent unwarranted fears and speculations\u201c which are described as detrimental by Pope Francis himself. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s therefore moving to see Pope Francis\u2019 sentiment echoed on our own parish notice boards. \u2018Let them stay\u2019 is visible on at least six parish notice boards within our diocese.
