The Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes in NSW [CLRI(NSW)] has expressed serious concern about the proposed direction of both major parties in their proposed treatment of asylum seekers and refugees.
‘There is a desperate need for leadership from all sides of politics,’ said Sister Marie Duffy rsm, president of CLRI(NSW). Use this letter to write to leaders of both parties.CLRI Media Statement July 2010
Concern about attitudes regarding the treatment of asylum seekers gnaws.
Honestly, the language of fear and threat by a minuscule number of asylum seekers is totally out of proportion with the actual truth of the matter. We are faced with people forced to flee from persecution, conflict and violence. Their courage, resilience and strength is expemplary. Yet, instead of assisting them to relocate and start a new life(after the required screening), they are demonised and marginalised and not given the chance that a “civilised” weatlhy nation such as ours can offer.
Compassion is requested from our political leaders and positive leadership from all sides of politics regarding this emotive and sensitive issue.
Compassion is totally lacking – winning the election is the focus of both parties
